Testimonials

From Dordogne’s caves to the classroom: How ancient art inspired modern learning.

During the 2012–2013 school year, I applied for a Fund for Teachers grant and was thrilled to learn that my proposal had been selected for support. That July, I traveled to France to explore a long-held passion of mine — the study of prehistoric cave art in the Dordogne region. To some, this may have seemed like an unusual or even frivolous pursuit of study; however, the experience profoundly enriched my teaching.

As an instructor of advanced dual language and immersion students, the topic fit seamlessly into my semester-long course on French history and the economic impact of tourism, titled Un Tour de France. My students not only discovered why this valley is home to so many cave paintings but also engaged in meaningful reflection on the human need for self-expression, the influence of art on society, and the evolution of thought, spirituality, community, and culture.

I have since shared this unit with my colleagues, extending the grant’s impact beyond my own classroom to benefit others within my department. None of this would have been possible without the support of the Fund for Teachers grant.
